New CLE Credit Opportunity for Pro Bono Work in Illinois

The Illinois Supreme Court has approved a new initiative that allows attorneys to receive CLE (Continuing Legal Education) credit for providing pro bono legal services. The MCLE Pro Bono Pilot Project introduces a nontraditional way for lawyers to meet their CLE requirements while also supporting access to legal help for individuals who may not otherwise afford it.

CLE for Pro Bono: What the New Pilot Program Offers

Under this two-year pilot, attorneys who volunteer through Illinois Free Legal Answers can earn CLE credit for their time. This online platform, administered by the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI), connects volunteer lawyers with people seeking brief legal advice on civil matters.

Program Details:

  • Attorneys receive 1 hour of CLE credit for every 2 hours of pro bono service
  • A maximum of 5 CLE hours can be earned per two-year reporting period
  • The credit applies under Supreme Court Rule 795(d)(14), which includes nontraditional CLE activities

This change offers attorneys an additional method for fulfilling continuing legal education requirements. It also acknowledges the professional value of pro bono work by integrating it into CLE accreditation.

By providing CLE credit for legal volunteering, the Illinois Supreme Court aims to support wider participation in pro bono efforts and to align professional development with community service.
